Look for What’s Wrong
By, Rachel Honoway, KowaBunga! Technologies

A few years ago, my husband and I decided to make the transition from renters to full-blown homeowners. We spent months searching for a home that met our needs and at least a few of our “wants”.

Finally, when we thought we had seen every available home on the market, our real estate agent stopped the car in front of the most adorable little Cape Cod within the neighborhood we had hoped to live.

It was *perfect*!

We placed an offer and within a few days, our agent called to say the house was ours. Other than completing mounds of paperwork, our only step was to have the house looked over by a professional home inspector.

We met the inspector at the house and followed him around as he made notes on a four page checklist. We moved from room to room and the inspector picked out all of the things that were broken, old, unsafe or in need of repair. As he did this, my picture of our perfect new home started to fade into visions of a flooding basement and a leaky roof.

In a matter of hours the inspector filled his four page checklist with dozens of “bad” things he had found. And boy, did he find everything - from the dirty chimney on the top of the house to the backed up drain in the basement and the yards of rotting carpet in between.

The inspector found absolutely everything that was wrong with our perfect house.

We sat back and wondered – how did he find all of those items? How did we miss them all?

The answer was simple: We were looking for perfect little adorable Cape Cod – and we found one. The inspector, on the other hand, was looking for leaky pipes, a sagging roof, drafty windows and creaky floorboards – and that’s exactly what he found.

This same paradigm shift can be applied to your affiliate program. It’s easy to sit back and see the perfection and be proud of what you’ve accomplished. It’s not so easy to take a step back and look for what’s wrong – especially when you believe your program is perfect. However, if you do take that step back, you’ll have a view that can offer you several possibilities for improvement and increased revenues.

After we recovered from the initial shock of our first home inspection, we took the inspector’s bad news and turned it into a challenge. The checklist he left us with became our “to-do” list. We spent a year knocking one item after the next off of the list. In the end, we had a great house that was about as close to perfect as we could imagine.

Here’s a challenge for you. Download (above) the checklist of things that might be “wrong” with your perfect affiliate program. Really look for the broken, old items and the areas in need of repair. This will give you a great “to-do” list in making your Affiliate Program the perfect, revenue-generating machine you’re looking for.
